After an international panel of judges consisting of industry experts, hobbyists and past winners spent nearly two days deliberating, Mothers announced today the ninth annual Shine Award competition winner at the 2009 SEMA Show. The competition was started in 2001 as a way to honor “uncompromising excellence in vehicle design.” The judging criteria are based on overall appearance, attention to detail, integration of custom and stock elements, pint finish, creative vision and execution of concept.

The Shine Award trophy was designed by Hot Rod Hall of Fame inductee and car designer Chip Foose, while the design was rendered in bronze by renowned automotive sculptor Steve Posson.

For 2009, the Shine Award was presented to the 1932 Ford B-400 “Deucenberg” that was built by Alan Johnson at Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop, Gadsden, Alabama, and is owned by Doug Cooper of Oyster Bay Cove, NY. The paint is BASF bordeaux, and the interior was done by Paul Atkins and plating by John Wright of Grafton, OH.

The vehicle started off as a personal project by Johnson, and there is a whopping estimated 16,000 hours into the build. The powertrain features a LS6 mated to a Bowler 4-speed overdrive transmission. A one-off stack fuel-injection air cleaner is used. The heads were re-flowed and it also has one-off valve covers, a one-piece engine and oil pan, additional sheet metal is a one-off skin for the engine and transmission. This 1932 Ford was the 2009 Riddler Award Winner, Goodguys Street Rod of the Year, and Best of Show at Shades of the Past. For those at the show who want to take a peek, the vehicle is located at the Bilstein Booth #23665.
